CTCM isn't an optional career credential for everyone who holds it, for many Texas state employees, it's legally required. Under Texas Government Code §656.052 and §656.053, any state agency employee with the job title of contract manager, contract administration manager, or contract technician, anyone spending 50% or more of their job on contract management activities, or anyone managing a contract over $5,000,000, must be a Certified Texas Contract Manager to legally perform those duties.

The path: complete required training through the Comptroller's Statewide Procurement Division, then you have exactly 3 months from course completion to take the exam.

Passing score is 80%. There's no reduced-cost retake either, the full exam fee applies every time you test, pass or fail, giving walking in prepared a real financial incentive beyond the pressure of a 3-month window.

Once you've taken the exam, official certification takes up to 30 business days to process after the Training and Policy Development team receives your scores. Factor that timeline in if you're working toward a compliance deadline, passing the exam and being officially certified aren't the same day.

Contract management itself carries a specific definition from the Comptroller: everything after contract execution, assessing risk, verifying contractor performance, monitoring compliance with deliverables and reporting requirements, enforcing contract terms, and ensuring practices align with the State of Texas Procurement Manual and Contract Management Guide. Post-execution oversight, not the procurement or bidding process itself.

Given the hard 3-month window, the 80% bar, and the cost of retesting, treat your training completion as the starting gun for serious, timely exam prep, a credential with a longer runway or a cheaper retake would allow more slack, this one doesn't.
